Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a study that uses a flexible tube with a camera to examine the inside of the digestive tract, either through the mouth or the rectum, depending on the area being examined.

What is it for? It allows the physician to check the lining of the esophagus, stomach, or intestine to detect inflammation, ulcers, polyps, or bleeding, and sometimes to take biopsies during the same procedure.

What does it include? It generally requires prior preparation and can be done with sedation for greater comfort; it is brief and performed on an outpatient basis.

Which specialist performs it? It is performed by the gastroenterologist, also by the general surgeon, and, in children, by the pediatric gastroenterologist. It is best to discuss your symptoms with one of them to find out whether this study is indicated in your case.

Before you book

  • Every licensed doctor in Mexico holds a cédula profesional, a national licence number. It appears on our doctor profiles where we have it, and you can verify it yourself against the federal registry.
  • Ask exactly what a quoted price covers. Consultation, imaging, anaesthesia, materials and follow-up visits are often quoted separately.
  • Ask who handles follow-up once you are home, and what happens if something needs correcting. For treatment that spans several visits, agree the schedule before you travel.

El Doctor is a directory. We do not provide medical care, take bookings, or receive payment from the providers listed.
