An abnormal Pap smear or colposcopy can lead to treatment of cervical lesions: electrocoagulation, cryocoagulation, or thermocoagulation of the cervix destroys the abnormal tissue by applying controlled heat or cold.

When is it indicated? In cases of precancerous lesions, certain persistent HPV infections, or abnormalities detected during the gynecological exam.

What to expect? It is an outpatient procedure that is relatively quick; afterward, mild discharge or discomfort may occur for a few days.

Who performs it? It is carried out by the gynecologist, sometimes with training in colposcopy, and in certain settings by a trained general practitioner. It's wisest to assess with a specialist which technique is right for your case.

Before you book

  • Every licensed doctor in Mexico holds a cédula profesional, a national licence number. It appears on our doctor profiles where we have it, and you can verify it yourself against the federal registry.
  • Ask exactly what a quoted price covers. Consultation, imaging, anaesthesia, materials and follow-up visits are often quoted separately.
  • Ask who handles follow-up once you are home, and what happens if something needs correcting. For treatment that spans several visits, agree the schedule before you travel.

El Doctor is a directory. We do not provide medical care, take bookings, or receive payment from the providers listed.
