When fluid builds up between the lung and the chest wall and causes difficulty breathing or pain, pleural drainage may be indicated. It's a procedure that removes that fluid or air from the pleural space using a tube or needle.

When is it indicated? It's performed for pleural effusions, air accumulation, or other causes that compress the lung and compromise breathing.

What to expect? It's done with local anesthesia and, depending on the case, requires monitoring while the contents are drained; a tube may be left in place for a period of time.

Who performs it? It's performed by the pulmonologist or the critical care and intensive care specialist, and in certain settings the general practitioner. Due to its nature, it must always be assessed and carried out by trained medical staff.

Before you book

  • Every licensed doctor in Mexico holds a cédula profesional, a national licence number. It appears on our doctor profiles where we have it, and you can verify it yourself against the federal registry.
  • Ask exactly what a quoted price covers. Consultation, imaging, anaesthesia, materials and follow-up visits are often quoted separately.
  • Ask who handles follow-up once you are home, and what happens if something needs correcting. For treatment that spans several visits, agree the schedule before you travel.
