What does an internist do?

They diagnose and follow up on diseases such as metabolic, cardiovascular, or respiratory ones, and provide guidance when the condition involves more than one body system.

When to see one?

• Chronic diseases that require ongoing control
• Several symptoms at once without a clear cause
• The need for a general assessment before referral to another specialty

What is the visit like?

The internist devotes a good part of the visit to the clinical history and the examination, and may order studies to gain a complete view of the state of health.
