What does a gerontologist do?

They provide a comprehensive assessment of the older person, review how their various conditions interact, and promote habits that help maintain autonomy and independence for as long as possible. Rather than focusing on a single organ, they look at the whole person.

When to seek care?

• For follow-up of chronic conditions common at this stage, such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia.
• When changes appear in memory, mobility, sleep, or mood.
• To organize the use of several medications at once.

What is the visit like?

Medical history, medications, and lifestyle are reviewed to build a realistic care plan, coordinated with the family and with the other specialties involved.
