Mouth Ulcers

Mouth ulcers are lesions or sores that appear on the mucosa of the mouth, such as the gums, tongue, lips, or the inside of the cheeks. They are usually bothersome and, in many cases, temporary.

Common causes: rubbing or bites, poorly fitted dentures or appliances, stress, certain nutritional deficiencies, or irritation from foods; some are associated with other health conditions.

When should you see a doctor? If a sore doesn't heal after a couple of weeks, is very painful, recurs frequently, or grows, it's advisable to have a professional check it.

Which specialist treats it? The dentist is the first point of contact, and in specific cases the oral pathologist or the maxillofacial surgeon takes part. Having a persistent ulcer checked in time by one of these specialists makes it possible to clarify its origin.
