Barrett Esophagus

Barrett syndrome, or Barrett's esophagus, is a change in the lining of the esophagus, where the normal cells are replaced by others similar to those of the intestine. It is usually related to chronic irritation from gastric reflux into the esophagus.

Common causes: The most associated factor is prolonged gastroesophageal reflux, which repeatedly exposes the esophagus to the acidic contents of the stomach over the course of years.

Frequent symptoms: It is frequently accompanied by reflux discomfort, such as burning behind the chest, regurgitation, or a sensation of difficulty swallowing; however, in many people it does not produce symptoms of its own.

Which specialist treats it? Its evaluation falls to the gastroenterologist, supported when appropriate by the general surgeon; the general practitioner can also guide the initial approach. If you have persistent reflux, it is advisable to discuss it with a professional for a timely evaluation.
