Rickets in Neonates

Rickets in neonates is a disorder of the growing bone of the newborn and infant, in which the bone tissue does not mineralize properly and the bones become soft or deformed. It is frequently associated with abnormalities in the metabolism of vitamin D, calcium or phosphorus.

Signs to watch for: these can include deformities in the long bones or the skull, delayed closure of certain structures and, in some cases, irritability or slow growth.

Common causes: it is related to nutritional deficiencies, little exposure to sunlight or kidney and hormonal problems that alter mineral handling.

Follow-up falls to the pediatrician together with the pediatric endocrinologist, and when there is a kidney component the nephrologist or pediatric nephrologist takes part. If you notice bone deformities or abnormal growth in your baby, the most sensible step is to discuss it with a professional for proper evaluation.
