Chronic prostatitis is a persistent inflammation or irritation of the prostate, a gland of the male reproductive system. Unlike acute cases, its symptoms tend to persist or recur over weeks or months.

Common symptoms: discomfort or pain in the pelvic or perineal area, burning when urinating, a frequent need to urinate and, at times, discomfort during or after ejaculation.

Common causes: it can be caused by infections or by noninfectious factors related to pelvic muscle tension and local inflammation; identifying the cause requires evaluation.

Which specialist treats it? The urologist is the go-to professional for evaluating the prostate, and when there is an infectious component the infectious disease specialist may be added. Since the symptoms can be confused with other conditions, it is advisable to see a doctor for a proper evaluation rather than self-treating.
