Intestinal Necrosis

Intestinal necrosis is the death of the tissue of a portion of the intestine, which occurs when it stops receiving enough blood supply or oxygen to stay alive.

Possible causes: It is usually related to the interruption of blood flow to the intestine, from blockage of the vessels, volvulus, trapped hernias, or serious abdominal infections.

Warning signs: Intense, sudden abdominal pain, distension, vomiting, fever, or absence of bowel movements are reasons to seek urgent medical care, since it is considered an emergency situation.

Who treats it? Its evaluation falls to the general surgeon, with support from the gastroenterologist, the internist, and, in cases of vascular origin, the vascular surgeon. When there are severe abdominal symptoms, the most prudent thing is to go immediately to an emergency department for a professional evaluation.
