Nearsightedness appears when care is sought because distant objects look blurry while near objects are seen clearly. It is one of the most common reasons for a vision consultation.

Nearsightedness is a refractive error in which the image is focused in front of the retina, generally because the eye is a bit longer than usual or the cornea has greater curvature.

Common symptoms:

• Blurry distance vision, for example when looking at signs or the chalkboard.
• Squinting the eyes, eyestrain, or headache when straining to see.
