Proctitis

When discomfort in the rectal area appears, such as pain, burning, or discharge, it is worth considering rectal inflammation and seeking guidance. This term, also called proctitis, describes the irritation or inflammation of the lining of the rectum, the final part of the large intestine.

Symptoms that may appear: pain or a sensation of pressure, urgency to have a bowel movement, light bleeding, discharge, or discomfort when having a bowel movement.

Possible causes: infections, inflammatory bowel processes, local irritation, or certain medical treatments, among others.

Who to see? Rectal inflammation is addressed in gastroenterology and general surgery, and the general practitioner can guide the first evaluation. If the symptoms persist or are accompanied by bleeding, it is advisable not to postpone the visit, since a proper evaluation allows the origin to be identified and the guidance that each case needs to be received.
