Histoplasmosis

Histoplasmosis is an infection caused by a fungus found in soils with bird or bat droppings, which enters the body when its spores are inhaled, mainly affecting the lungs.

How it shows up: many people have no symptoms; when they appear, they may include fever, cough, fatigue, chest pain and, in some cases, skin lesions.

Where it is acquired: it is associated with caves, chicken coops or places with a buildup of guano, especially when stirring up soil or dust.

Which specialist treats it? The pulmonologist assesses the lung involvement and the dermatologist the skin manifestations, within the workup of this infection. If you have persistent respiratory symptoms after being exposed to these environments, it's advisable to consult a professional.
