Hemochromatosis

Hemochromatosis is a disorder in which the body accumulates excess iron, gradually depositing it in organs such as the liver, heart, and pancreas.

Origin of the problem: In many cases it has a hereditary component that favors greater intestinal iron absorption than usual. There are also forms associated with other blood conditions.

Common symptoms: It may show up with fatigue, joint pain, changes in skin coloring, or abdominal discomfort, although for years it usually remains silent.

When to see a doctor? When there is a family history or tests that show high iron levels, an evaluation is worthwhile. The hematologist is the one who evaluates this type of disorder and defines the tests needed to better understand the situation.
