Hepatic Fibrosis

The gastroenterologist is the professional who assesses hepatic fibrosis, a buildup of scar tissue in the liver that forms in response to sustained damage over time. It reflects an underlying process rather than an isolated disease.

Why it happens: viral liver infections, excessive alcohol consumption, buildup of liver fat, or other chronic conditions can generate this scar tissue gradually.

How it shows up: in the early stages it usually goes unnoticed; later there may be tiredness, discomfort in the right side of the abdomen, or abnormalities in laboratory tests.

When to seek care? In the case of risk factors or abnormal liver results, an evaluation is advisable. In children, the pediatric gastroenterologist takes part; reviewing the case with these specialists helps understand the extent of the process and provide follow-up.
