Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. It is very common and, depending on its cause, can be contagious.

Frequent symptoms: redness of the eye, watering, a gritty sensation, itching and, at times, discharge or eyelids stuck together on waking.

Common causes: viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or contact with irritating substances.

When is it advisable to have it checked? If there is significant pain, blurred vision, marked sensitivity to light, or it does not improve, conjunctivitis warrants evaluation. The general practitioner or the internist can provide guidance at a first appointment. In the face of persistent eye symptoms, the prudent step is to see a professional.
