Balanitis

Balanitis is the inflammation of the glans, the tip of the penis, which sometimes also involves the foreskin. It is a common discomfort and, in general, treatable.

Common symptoms: Redness, swelling, itching, or burning in the area, sometimes with discharge or discomfort when urinating.

Common causes: Inadequate or excessive hygiene, irritation, fungal or bacterial infections, and, in some cases, conditions such as diabetes that promote its appearance.

Which specialist treats it? The urologist is the appropriate professional to assess balanitis; in children the pediatrician may be involved, and the general practitioner usually guides the first consultation. If the discomfort in that area persists or recurs, discussing it with a health professional allows identifying the cause and clarifying doubts.
