Actinomycosis

Actinomycosis is a rare infection caused by bacteria that normally live in the mouth and digestive tract, and that can cause disease when they invade deeper tissues, forming areas of slow, persistent inflammation.

Common symptoms: It may present with firm swelling, especially in the neck and jaw region, abscess formation and, at times, drainage of material through the skin.

When to seek care? It's advisable to seek an evaluation in the event of swelling that does not resolve, especially on the face or neck, or after dental procedures or injuries.
