Vascular endothelial dysfunction is the basis for the development of the atherogenic process that culminates in global heart failure and death. Anecdotal cases of myocardial infarction in premenopausal women have occurred during menstruation, a time when women have low blood estrogen levels. The author conducted a study of endothelial function using the flow-mediated dilation method, in premenopausal women who smoked cigarettes, to demonstrate the deleterious effect this very harmful habit causes on endothelial function.
