As a hematologist I study diseases of the blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen, both benign conditions such as deficiency anemias, primary thrombocytopenias (low platelets), coagulation disorders, or malignant ones such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, among others. The laboratory tests I generally use in hematology are the complete blood count, the peripheral blood smear, coagulation times, and a series of specific tests for each disease, some more sophisticated than others. In turn, the cornerstone of the diagnosis of many of these conditions is bone marrow aspiration. Currently, genetic studies have gained more strength and determine the use of what is called personalized medicine. I use tools such as microarray, exome, or genome studies to make a precision diagnosis and apply pharmacogenomics to choose the best treatment for each disease, individualizing it for each patient, so we can know which medication will have the best therapeutic response and which will have adverse effects and is better not to use.
